    NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System

    Description

The Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS®) is a national-regional partnership working to provide new tools and forecasts to improve safety, enhance the economy, and protect our environment with a significant focus on understanding and observing marine life. As the U.S. contribution to the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), IOOS and its network of 11 regional associations gather and provide access to integrated ocean information, which is available in near real time and retrospectively. This improved access enhances our ability to understand and predict coastal events. The IOOS Regional Associations and associated observing programs, such as the U.S. Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) and the Animal Telemetry Network (ATN), use various methods - ranging from traditional surveys, environmental DNA, animal tracking, imagery, passive acoustic monitoring, and beyond - to gather data about marine species in U.S. waters.
