In this virtual side event to the Finance in Common Summit, representatives from GBIF, international development banks and private-sector companies discussed how and why other actors that generate, publish and use biodiversity data can participate in Data4Nature.

This joint initiative of Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and GBIF encourages development actors and their partners to share biodiversity data from projects. Preliminary estimates show that data gathered in the course of just five development banks could generate hundreds of thousands of occurrence records annually, filling knowledge gaps in many data-poor developing countries.

Reuse of this data supports scientific research and policy, guides ecosystem preservation and not only fights against biodiversity loss, but also contributes to sustainable development in areas such as food security, climate change and human health.
