Thematic communities

Fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and data access within the GBIF network

Biodiversity data from the GBIF network supports research that spans disciplinary boundaries and expands the scope of possible research. By monitoring patterns of data access use, particularly through our literature tracking programme, and cultivating key partnerships with experts working in different domains, GBIF sets priorities—with the help of the GBIF Science Committee—to scale up our support of data holders and users across different scientific and technical communities of practice.

For people coming to GBIF the first time, these thematic communities offer a lens focused on topics they already know and how GBIF relates to them. They also provide a way for members of the GBIF Secretariat and nodes to understand specific communities' data needs and practices and develop strategies for improving the quality, supply and use of relevant, fit-for-purpose data from the GBIF network.
